Why Sending the Same Resume to Every Job is Holding You Back

Hey Reader,

One of the most common mistakes job seekers make—especially in tech—is using the same resume for every job application.

It feels efficient. You’ve spent hours perfecting your resume, highlighting your skills, and making sure it looks polished. So why wouldn’t you send it everywhere?

Because hiring managers and applicant tracking systems (ATS) aren’t looking for a generic “good resume.” They’re looking for the right resume—one that aligns with the specific needs of the job they’re hiring for.

Why Tailoring Your Resume is Non-Negotiable

Most companies use ATS software to filter out resumes before they ever reach human eyes. These systems scan for keywords and phrases from the job description. If your resume doesn’t match, it might never be seen.

Even when a hiring manager does review your application, they’re looking for clear evidence that you’re a perfect fit. A generic resume makes them do the work of connecting the dots between your experience and their needs—and most won’t take the time.

How to Fix It (Without Writing a New Resume for Every Job)

  1. Study the Job Description – Identify the most important skills, tools, and qualifications they mention.
  2. Adjust Your Summary & Skills Section – Make sure your opening statement highlights the experience that’s most relevant to the role.
  3. Reorder Your Bullet Points – Your resume should emphasize the accomplishments that align with this specific job, not just list everything you’ve done.
  4. Swap Out Keywords – If the job posting says “cloud security” instead of “cloud computing,” adjust your wording to match. Small changes make a big difference.

These simple tweaks can double or triple your chances of making it past the initial screening process.
